1st Sunday team feed the beds

This Sunday the town centre volunteers distributed a wonderful feed for the beds which we hope will be feeding us next year. A great pile of steaming well-rotted horse manure which was collected for us by Darren Widdup and his lovely lady Sarah.
These two heroes’s turned out very early on Sunday morning to shovel muck and deliver it to the beds. Not only did they smile all the way through but they also refused any recompense for their petrol. The reason the muck was collected so early is that, as organiser of the British Legion Poppy appeal in Todmorden, Darren was going to be very busy for the rest of the day organising his teams of collectors, he suggested that if we really insisted on thanking him we could make a donation to the poppy appeal – and this we were delighted to do.

In the afternoon the horse manure was dug into two of the beds outside the community college and one outside the police station,

the beds were then covered with clear polythene to protect the soil from the worst effects of the winter rain and to allow them to warm up earlier in the spring.

We were very pleased to see how well the Kale plants which were put in last month had grown; hopefully they will provide pickings all through the winter. We were equally pleased to see how little the weeds in the Pollination Street bed had grown. We will be planning our growing for next year over December and January and then……all go for 2013!
