Green Machines benefit Calderdale Parks and improve recycling targets

“With leaf fall fast approaching we need to create space at Milner Royd by holding these events it helps raise Public awareness on recycling and how the Safer Cleaner Greener section deal with the issues of waste generated from he streets of Calderdale .Big Heap12 is part of week long series of events which is using 500 tons of compost from the Calderdale streets and parks in community projects around the borough, and on Wednesday the scheme will host a seminar for other local Authorities on the process used to create the compost from street cleaning and parks green waste.”

“The composting project enables us to improve green recycling targets, comply with environmental legislation and improve public awareness of the benefits of compost, as well as reducing the amount of street waste being sent to landfill, the demand and popularity of the scheme has now led to another compost giveaway to be held on Saturday 18th September at Milner Royd .” States Mark .
The innovative recycling scheme produces compost by mixing green waste from parks with fallen leaves collected by street cleaning teams,
Calderdale parks and Street scene has recently increased its recycling capacity with the purchase of new green waste recycling equipment including an Eco Green shredder, an Eco Green Screener and 150hp Ford Tractor.
Mark Dempsey Support services Manager States “Global warming is the biggest issue which confronts the world today and recycling in any form can only be encouraged environmental and cost pressure means that we have to move from landfill disposal to recycle and reuse”.

The project started in November 2005 and with a Recycling in Action grant in 2006 has led to many different green waste and compost initiatives such as the successful Big heap events and Black gold compost giveaways, a civic trust award for environmental innovation, using compost as a turf top dressing soil improver, and links into schools and the community by using the compost to establish native wildflower areas within the parks of Calderdale increasing awareness of recycling and improving biodiversity within urban parks .

With the equipment in place the parks and Street section hopes to increase the amount of municipal street cleaning waste that will be recycled by up to 50%.

As stated by Mr Dempsey “The benefits of obtaining the equipment now enable the section to improve green recycling targets, comply with environmental legislation ,and improve public perception and awareness of the benefits of compost and the reduction of municipal street waste being sent to landfill”.
