Busy Woman's May Time
Last update: 28.09.10 First posted: 16.05.10 by Mary in busywomanThe week started with our monthly two meetings and 3 men from Derry.
They had heard Pam speak over there a couple of weeks ago and as soon as the dust clouds allowed them to travel they came to see what its all about.
We found three beds to sleep in and a tour guide (nick) and they liked what they saw. They went home inspired to set up their own incredible project, and we all wish you much success. Declan has already sent me over the tourist info on Northern Ireland and I look forward to a visit. Yet another thing added to my list of things to do before I die.
Estelle and I did a talk for a group of local parents, the feedback was great and incredible actions will happen as a result, it was great to hear parents saying the kids want to grow food and how much they like the project.
Canada was the topic this week and you can read about what they are doing in Estelle’s Canada Blog, so far away but yet they get it, it’s a wonderful feeling to know others out their in big countries are thinking the same as us.
We saw 25 people from Doncaster today having their tour of Tod , thank you for your questions it good to be quizzed as its all a lesson. See Estelle’s Doncaster blog
Living without TV is the best thing I have ever done, particularly now the world is going crazy with its volcanoes and wobbley politics, its interesting how much people talk about things they have watched. The men from Derry told me about a programme I would like to see, a man trying to live like St Francis- without money and being good. I would love to ditch money and going to work for a year. Two things stop me, I love my job and I am a coward.
I planted some kale at the canal garden this morning and was very very surprised to se it had done so well, hardly any weeds, no slugs and the angelica 5ft tall. The lettuces are perfect, not a sign of dog poo in an area that was a toilet. The picture doesn’t tell the tale but gives an idea of the size.

This is my morrelo Nick planted, it’s the first year and has grown 8inches.

Much interest in our low tech roof garden at this mornings talk , its visqueen and old sheets curtains and duvets with any old muck on top, it works and costs not much. Its primarily to feed our bees, strawberries herbs, fennel marjoram thyme parsley flowers , lettuce on the low wood shed, it has done cabbages and brocolli.

You can see we are working on another space

Progress on our sharing garden, its looking good, people are using it and visiting, chives cut regularly, purple broccoli gone and Fred’s new heritage birthday adopted pea Robinson now in.

This is the little car park bed it needs doing every day, litter and stuff blown on it, even so it gets full sun and hundreds of people pass bye and that’s what matters

This is my little bus stop bed, doing well despite 3inches tops of rubbish soil, its got herbs gooseberry, raspberry, black homberg grape and a tiny apple tree as well as flowers and lettuce

Here we have my pride and joy trees in dustbins, quince

and apple in blossom

growing high up in my garden Joster berry first year not bad eh?

Another highlights of my life, a tiny sign of life on the mulberry tree.

Let it not be said that behind every busy woman there is a gap, not here! a very busy man has been making stuff , moving stuff, digging holes and shaping the new shed roof supports from beautiful Hawthorne branches.

All in all a good week, thanks to John and Wes for helping us with the Unitarian Church grounds, we have ambitions to make it even more wonderful- another huge job for when your not watching telly.
Our bees are coming soon and Fred has de nailed the wood to make their des rez platform and we have planted up lovely food supplies.
One last picture this is the girls and Napoleon having curry!
