The Peas & Love Revolution: Mary Clear, TEDx Huddersfield
Last update: 7.11.12 First posted: 7.11.12 by Adam in Incredible Spreadable
The Todmorden vortex had well and truly sucked me in, and subsequently had spat me out onto the A646 heading to Huddersfield. Alongside me was the ever exuberant Mary Clear; who was the reason for this adventure into ‘ideas worth spreading’ – The inaugural TEDx Huddersfield event was starting with a spreadable idea true to the ‘Pennine Punk’ theme of the evening… Incredible Edible Todmorden!

They laughed at Mary’s jokes and seemed intrigued by the power of D.I.Y kindness to transform a town… Watch the whole talk here now for free, it’s only 15 minutes long:
Next up was Tony Ryan who talked about humanity’s relationship with sunshine and how 350 years ago it changed dramatically when we started using the “millions of years old preserved in fossilised form” type of sunshine otherwise known as ‘oil’. Obviously the message was along the same lines – we know the problems, we know the solutions, there’s no time to waste so lets continue with the positive transformation of spaceship Earth.

Hopefully Tony and his students from the University of Sheffield will make a visit to Tod to show us how sunshine can be used for cooking food and boiling water – by using mirrors to harness the sun’s rays. Tony was just the start of the weird and wonderful world of science and technology… We heard of 5 year olds on twitter by Emma Wimpenny and Gill Turner (@yr1melthamce), how deception can be utilised by professional athletes with Stuart Nolan, Thorium as an alternative nuclear fuel with Bob Cywinski (@BobCywinski), and finally we entered the world of invisible things as Jim Al-Khalili explained how quantum physics can revolutionise biology and how the new field of ‘quantum biology’ is coming of age.
