Coltsfoot (short version)
Coltsfoot, a common plant, is the cough remedy par excellence, whose use goes back to ancient times. It is a mild non-toxic herb, suitable for domestic use, including the treatment of children and babies, in a syrup or as an infusion. It both soothes and cools. It is also one of the main ingredients in herbal tobacco, and those who have damaged lungs will find coltsfoot cleansing.
One of Coltsfoot’s common names is ‘Son before Father’ because its flowers appear with the first fine weather in early spring, and the leaves come only after the flowers have faded.
Coltsfoot was our herb of the month in February 2011: read the much fuller account of it here.
