Woodruff has light sedative properties. It was much used in the Middle Ages as a strewing herb and a medicine said to remove obstructions of the liver and spleen and to aid digestion. In modern times it’s largely used as an aromatic.

In Germany May wine, whose key constituent is Waldmeister, as Woodruff is known there, is traditionally served on May Day.
