“What time???”

That was our response, when the lovely Dave, at Central Garage told Michaela and me that we had to leave Tod at 6:30am on Sunday morning, in order to get the ‘burger van’ over to Ewood Park, Blackburn to be up and ready for the 8:30am kick-off at Nigel Haworth’s Fantastic Food Show…

Ever the intrepid explorers, Nik and I opted to travel up on Saturday evening, find out where we were going, and then find a nice quiet spot for the night, with the faithful campervan… The football ground was easy to find…we just followed the yellow AA roadsigns pointing us in the right direction…already it was beginning to look like a much bigger affair than we had first anticipated!! But then I got hungry…we needed to find a pub serving dinners…and quick! at the next junction Nik and I followed our failsafe plan to find good food..random travelling…
“ OK…left or right?” “left!”…. “ok, now..left or right?”….“er…Left!” “Look!! a pub..with FOOD!!….“screeeeeech”..we parked up and I raced inside…“A table for two? no problem, it will be a little wait.” We went for a short walk but immediately noticed a big banner at the side of the pub…

Yup…we had inadvertently arrived at one of Nigel Haworth’s Gastro-pubs…it was all gorgeous…but my desert was sublime…Celery sorbet with thyme meringues…A taste of things to come!
All filled up we settled down in a quiet spot and got some sleep before the big day…

We all converged on the football ground at around 7:30 the next morning…After an initial problem with the back-to-front burger waggon we soon got to work setting up our stand… all our prep work paid off, and we had forgotten nothing…

It looked fab and we were already attracting attention from nearby stands…maybe it was our vegetable-planted hanging baskets, or the rows of apple trees, or the unusual array of wild foraged foods…..or maybe it was just the strong aroma of the wild garlic that Michalea and I had gathered early on Friday morning, in-between checking out progress with the bankers and loading up the IET display stuff into the burger waggon….

“Oh No!!” our electricity cable had the wrong fitting on, for the football supply…no worries, Nik, ever-ready, whizzed off on his bikemobile to B&Q to buy an adapter…meanwhile the lovely Northcote girls brought us a fabulously long extension cable, which saved the day…

The crowds surged into the grounds after Nigel’s grand opening…and Michaela was soon busy drumming up an audience for the first of her cooking extravaganzas..
obviously!
…S.J. from Porcus, in Tod, came to help out, and Michaela kicked off by cooking up some of S.J’s sausages, with some of the wild garlic that we had gathered…

..While Nik and I set to and handed out unusual foraged foods that we had gathered the day before..folk were very brave at trying out some of the flowers and leaves that we had on display…from Agretti, to sorrel, to broad-bean flowers….

…and gobbled up the ‘Weed Fritters’ which I made with dandelions, wild sorrel and wild garlic, sprinkled with sea salt and shavings of parmesan…

…and Michaela sang the praises of the ‘Pink Asparagus’…..one visitor, and worker for the local environment agency, whose job it was to instruct clients on how to eradicate Japenese Knotweed, went away determined to teach them how to cook and eat it into oblivion!

Cooking with our produce, was the order of the day…and Michaela certainly cooked up a storm with her Porcus pork loin with wild garlic,

…and Walsden-raised duck with homemade Tod Damson Jam…

While two lovely young food connoisseurs, Jake and Ben, were determined to see who could eat the most wild foraged salad…

and more and more people flocked to our stand to find out more about the whole Incredible Edible project…

Nigel came to visit the stand, and Michaela challenged him to guess the special dish she served him..yes..it was the ‘pink asparagus’ again…he was impressed and invited her to Northcote to show them how to cook it…

We all had a fantastic time, even though we were so busy there was no time for sitting, or taking in the delights of the other stands…. we did manage to get Ice-Cream as the lovely lady was packing up…and Michaela and I snuck off to find cheese and wine, before Nik rounded off the day nicely with his talk in the Directors suite…

Lasting impressions? It was the first time we had participated in a show devoted entirely to food, and local food at that…it was refreshing to have so many people interested and astonished at what we are doing here in Todmorden…

The final word has to go to Adam Willacy, who emailed us today…

“…I went to all the stalls today but by far the most inspirational and helpful was your stall …”
