Health Centre Herb DayLast update: 6.03.11 First posted: 5.03.11 by Estelle in Apothecary
To launch the new herb section of the site created by Alan and Helena
we had an open day at the health centre to celebrate all things herby.
Here is Alan with his lovely wife Lauren looking at the medicinal planting.
Helena greeted visitors and answered any questions about the herbs
as well as creating a great herbal recipe leaflet, if you would like one they will be available again at The Unitarian Church tomorrow 2-4pm.
It was a really cold and we wondered if folk would brave the cutting wind to come,
but come they did, maybe they couldn’t resist the smell of all that cooking wafting around.
Michaela cooked up a storm, with bubble and squeak,
and Mediterranean veg cooked in olive oil with Todmorden cheese,
Tony catering manager from Tod High
cooked up my favourite sweet potato with butter nut squash soup, also pasta with tomato sauce, not a grain of sugar or salt went into these two super dishes.
And Pauline learned how to cook on a gas ring
New volunteer Lynne, and Jenny sliced up the fabulous food that people brought
there was a great variety from caraway cake and walnut and chocolate slices
to olive breads and focaccia, not to mention some amazing cheese bites.
Many scrummy looking entries were brought in for the herbilcious cooking competition, which was judged by the chef from Weir Warman Ltd
winners names at the bottom of the page
Moving away from food, Nick gave demonstration on how to graft fruit trees
There was a great deal of interest and some even captured a step by step how to on their mobile phones
Meanwhile the little people were busy sowing their own herbs
Choosing the right herb to plant is a serious business,
Helena in the herb garden was happy explain all the plants and there uses
Children and grown ups took the herb quiz, fun and informative
